Zesty, aromatic nose with fresh, bright citrus fruit, a mineral, saline character and crisp acidity.
The 40 hectare Tenuta Aquilaia estate in Maremma (southern Tuscany), close to Scansano, was acquired by Azienda Uggiano in 2019. Only 15ha are currently dedicated to vineyards - of average age 15 years - although they have recently added a further 1.5 hectares to bring this total nearer to 17ha. Here they produce five red grape varieties: Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Alicante, Merlot and Petit Verdot; plus white varieties Vermentino and Chardonnay. The area was an old Etruscan settlement and site of ancient winemaking, and several mementos of the Etruscan era are still visible.
The Vermentino vines are cultivated in soils which are a combination of sandy clay and gravel, rich with organic matter. After a cold maceration for 12-15 hours at 10-12ºC the grapes undergo a soft pressing. Then the free-run juice is fermented at 18-22ºC in stainless steel.
Zesty aromatic nose with notes of preserved lemon, wild herbs and white flower. The palate is taut and fresh with bright citrus fruit and a lightly mineral, saline character. All balanced by crisp acidity, and with a touch of white pepper on the finish.
A perfect match for shellfish and grilled fish.
