A beautifully pale pink dry rosé wine that is balanced and perfectly poised between rich and delicious fruit flavours and freshness.
Greyfriars Vineyard is located on the sunny south facing chalk slopes of the Hog’s Back at Puttenham, just outside Guildford in the Surrey Hills. The original vineyard was planted in 1989 and since owners Mike and Hilary Wagstaff took over in 2010 they have expanded the area under vine to 40 acres on two sites, focusing on producing stunning English Sparkling Wine. They have also built a state of the art winery and a natural chalk underground cellar for ageing their wine prior to release.
Their vineyards are predominantly planted with the three classic Champagne grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. They produce a range of spectacular sparkling wines reflecting the unique local soil conditions, climate and heritage of the Surrey North Downs. They also produce several exciting still wines, including the ever-popular Rose´. Their wines have been extremely well received and have won many prizes in international competitions. Their Rose´ Reserve won the trophy in the International Wine Challenge for the best English Sparkling Rose´ in 2019 and their Non Vintage Cuve´e won the coveted Gold Medal in the 2023 WineGB Awards.
2022 was an outstanding year for English wines characterised by a lot of sunshine and dry weather throughout the summer heatwave allowing us to make some excellent still wines. The Pinot Noir grapes came from the ripest corner of our Monkshatch vineyard and were soaked for 12 hours prior to pressing with the juice undergoing malolactic fermentation. The Pinot Meunier component did not go through malolactic fermentation to preserve the fruit and maintain acidity. All the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks. Bottled in June 2023.
Using their best Pinot Noir grapes along with a generous splash of Pinot Meunier, they have crafted a beautifully pale pink dry rosé wine that is balanced and perfectly poised between rich and delicious fruit flavours and freshness. This wine offers summer berry fruit flavours and a dry, zesty finish that will transport you straight to a warm summer’s day no matter the weather.
The wine is a wonderful aperitif but would work well with grilled vegetables, try it with miso-grilled aubergine with dried cranberries.
