Unit 7 Scandinavia Court,
Chain Bar Road, Cleckheaton,
West Yorkshire, BD19 3QW
Dark brooding fruit, softened by plummy Merlot and a nice touch of lip-smacking acidity.
Léon Verhaeghe left his native country of Morsleede in Flanders in the early 20th century to settle in south-western France. His son Charles, together with his wife Marie-Thérèse started a farm with mixed cultures in 1958, planting vines on vineyard land devastated by the frosts in 1956. They continued to add one more hectare of vineyards, in three different plots every year.
The estate is now run by Charles’ sons Pascal and Jean-Marc who studied winemaking in Burgundy, California and Bordeaux.
The vines are worked organically, without any herbicides and chemical fertilisers. They don’t spray against rot and work manually, with pruning and green harvesting (reducing to 4-5 bunches per vine). Leaf stripping is undertaken for greater sun exposure and air circulation, along with the use of organic composts. Grapes are hand harvested on the verge of over ripeness and 80% of the wine is tank aged, 20% is barrel aged in 2 year old barrels for 16 to 18 months.
It`s lunchtime and you could murder a Cahors, but you don`t fancy taking out one of the big guns. Heritage is for you! A bonny ruby-red, this Malbec is softened by plummy Merlot, soothing to the gullet, with a nice touch of lip-smacking acidity.
Pair with Duck, game, cold cuts of meat and cheese.
