A fruity nose with a scent of sea-air, an intense effervescence and complex flavours of orchard fruit and citrus.
Champagne Bollinger owns an impressive 178 hectares of vineyards, of which 85% are in Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages. Pinot Noir represents 60% of the House`s vineyards and defines the House style: complex and powerful with remarkable structure. In 2012 Champagne Bollinger was certified High Environment Value (HEV) this certification rewards a number of environmental procedures implemented at the Maison.
In 1976, Bollinger Vintage was re-named Grande Année. Then in 1997, it became La Grande Année - `The Great Year` - a name simple enough to illustrate its exceptional status, because only truly extraordinary years become vintage at Bollinger. This vintage is entirely fermented in oak barrels and is produced from fourteen crus: 91% Grand Cru and 9% Premier Cru. 2008 is the first vintage of La Grande Année to be bottled in the new `1846` bottle, which is to replicate a small magnum and inspired by a 19th-century bottle discovered in the Bollinger cellars in 1846.
Champagne Bollinger has never abandoned their traditional craft of vinifying their wines in small aged oak barrels. This craft method helps develop aromas of great finesse and 19 Crus are used, mainly Aÿ and Verzenay for the Pinot Noir, Chouilly and Oiry for the Chardonnay. Only very high quality harvests become a vintage and the 2014 vintage gave rise to a wine that is simultaneously structured, rich and complex, in terms of both its minerality and exceptional intensity. After a prolonged ageing on its lees, even today every bottle of La Grande Année is riddled and disgorged by hand and fermented entirely in aged oak barrels. The wine is then sealed with a natural cork and cellar aged for more than twice the time required by the appellation.
A precise and fruity nose with a scent of sea-air. Aromas of cherry and lemon, quince and bergamot. Notes of hazelnut and almond, peach and Mirabelle plum. The palate is fine, with and intense effervescence, followed by a wonderful vinosity, and then balanced with delicate acidity. The very fine texture and sea-air finish bring excellent length, accompanied by a delicate minerality and the complex flavours of orchard fruit and citrus.
A good partner to light red meats, game, cold-cuts, grilled fish, shellfish and even some spicy Asian inspired flavours.
