West Yorkshire, BD19 3QW
Enormously gastronomic and persistent, organic Vinho Verde Tinto.
Born with an inclination for metaphysics, wine maker Vasco Croft thought of being an astrologer in his teens, then decided to become an architect. In his twenties he discovered Steiner’s biodynamic philosophy which eventually, in 2003 led him to start his own wine project, in in a semi-abandoned property belonging to his family since the 17th century in Casal do Paço.
With exceptional conditions for soil and solar exposition, the vineyards lie on softly inclined hills over-looking the Lima River. This covers an area of more than 20 hectares of ecologically sound territory, rich in biodiversity. The vines are located in an area with forests of acacia, oak, beech and pine. There are also chestnuts orchards and a park of century old monumental trees.
The grapes are crushed using the age-old traditional method of “Foot Treading” before fermentation and maceration takes place in granite tanks and inox vats. A controlled fermentation between 19c-22c, followed by a slight filtration and the minimal use of sulphur in vinification to help preserve the wine.
The nose has aromas of red fruits with some vegetal notes, sour cherry, cassis, spicy and menthol hints. The palate is firm yet round, with pronounced tannins and a crisp acidity that makes this wine enormously gastronomic and persistent.
Ideal with traditional Portuguese dishes as well as Italian, Indian, Thai and most spicy cuisine.
